Studies have shown that even moderate physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, reduces the urge to smoke. Withdrawal symptoms and cravings for cigarettes decrease during exercise and for as long as 50 minutes afterwards.

Since late 2017, the Tackling Tobacco team have worked closely with Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council to coordinate the fitness and information sessions in North Adelaide and Elizabeth. The program has run every Wednesday 11am-2pm and Friday from 12pm to 3pm at 2x Aqua dome locations and gives Aboriginal community and clients in the Northern area the opportunity to participate in gym, boxing and an aqua aerobics class. We have the pleasure to have Commonwealth gold medalist Tanya as the gym and aquatic instructor for the Wednesday program at North Adelaide.

This has also been a great way for our Tackling Tobacco staff to get to know our community and provide additional support to participants who are thinking about giving up the smokes. Exercise is a great engagement tool and providing a fun, active and healthy environment has been great for both our team and participants.

With Covid-19 in play, these facilities have been closed until further notice – however, we are excited to announce that we have now created an online fitness community via. Facebook.

We want to keep this community group an open and honest discussion where you are able to get support from other fellow community members around you.

We endeavor to do weekly workouts with you all, aiming to have 2-3 session a week. We will be a listening ear or are here to answer any questions you may have through out this program.
